date: 22 Dec 1999 News Release - 17th December 1999 Creator of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Launches Wireless Internet Site. Imagine you’re lost in Hobart searching for a place to stay or you are explaining the rules of tiddlywinks to a native German or even discussing the theory of complexity over dinner… Don’t panic! Author Douglas Adams has today launched a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) enabled version of the online guide to life, the universe and everything. This means that h2g2.com can now be accessed while on the move via WAP-enabled wireless phones at tdv wap, and soon other handheld devices.
h2g2.com was launched in May 1999. Based on Adams’s sci-fi novel, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, h2g2.com is the online guide to life, the universe and everything. Adams wants people to come to the site and contribute to the electronic guide with entries about anything and everything. In time, Adams believes h2g2.com will become a real world electronic guide to life, the universe and everything - accessible anytime, anywhere from any portable handheld device. Information available from the online guide in future will be tailored by geographic location thereby allowing people to access relevant information wherever they happen to be in the world. The launch of the WAP site is being overseen by John Bissell, Chief Operating Officer of Douglas Adams’ digital media company, The Digital Village (TDV) who joined the company from British Telecommunications plc, where he was an executive in the Group Mobility Division.
Douglas Adams, creator of h2g2.com and author of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy explained:
John’s appointment is a significant coup as we continue our expansion and embrace new technologies to achieve our goal to make h2g2 a truly portable guide to life.
